Paper bash for global understanding

My piece G'day for the exhibition Paper Bash for Global Understanding to be held in the Philippines in September this year.

Artist Statement G’Day

In my piece for Paper Bash for Global Understanding I decided to produce a fairly typical landscape from Central Australia and combine it with an expression typically Australian in G’day. By producing the lettering with rice I am making a connection with The Philippines where the work will be displayed. The work has been made from recycled archival board that has been dyed with Cartesol dyes that are used in the paper industry. I chose to use recycled paper rather than indigenous plant fibre paper because of the way the pulp reacts and because of the vibrant colours available to me. The work is a pulp painting made by double dipping and manipulating the paper fibres.

Papyrus collaboration and nest book

Autumn colours for a book project.

Paste paper collage
Yabbers Collaborative book
Within our yabbers group this year we are making a collaborative book from papyrus paper, we've had sessions on making papyrus, on making paper from papyrus and carving stamps. We are making the books at our next session but I have made a start on mine.

Nest Book 2011
The nest book I entered into Faszination Papier was sold so Helene asked if I had another. Luckily I had enough plant fibre papers to make another so it will appear as the exhibition tours through Germany and Poland.

I have been cooking up lots of fibre the last few days, I've done globe artichoke flowers, pumpkin vine, ginger lily, tussock grass and kangaroo paw. I'm teaching a plant fibre workshop at Geelong in a couple of weeks and I need to replenish my supplies of plant papers.

Upcoming classes and IAPMA

I have been quite busy of late editing the newest IAPMA Bulletin and in my new role as President. The Bulletin is now at the printers so I have a bit of time up my sleeve until it comes time to send them out.

I am running a new series of classes at Ringwood in August and September and have decided this time to feature the following books:
  • 1. Star or Pie book and variations
Using simple folding, cutting and glueing a range of fun books suitable for using as ornaments or surprise gifts will be produced.
  • 2. Jacobs Ladder

Have fun with the Jacob’s ladder format. Gail will show you how to join the sections together so that the book will flip flop like those toys we had as children. We’ll make a six page ladder and a two page magic wallet.

  • 3. Hard cover reverse art book (as in Eco Books)

Using offcuts of fabric and leather a hardcover journal with exposed stitching will be produced.

  • 4. Slip Case to fit previous book

Make a slip case that will be covered, lined and fitted to the book produced in the third week.

Recycling and equinox exhibition

Years ago I made a writing set from dyed cotton linter with the sheets of paper and envelopes ranging in colour from yellow through green to turquoise. It was in a folder which I had made from a seascape pulp painting from another project. I decided it was time to recycle it again since people don't seem to write letters these days. Here are a few pictures of the seascape book.

69 Smith Street Gallery is holding a couple of photography exhibitions which are opening this Wednesday. One of them was called Equinox and you were meant to take the photographs between midday 21 March and midday 22 March. I was out of alfoil on the evening of the 21st so grilled some skewers using baking paper on the griller tray. I loved the patterns made by the marinade and the burn so that became my first equinox photo. I had been making papyrus and papyrus paper as part of a Yabbers project do decided to print the photos on papyrus, so of course I needed a photo of the papyrus growing in our pond. Nothing says autumn more than pumpkins and this year we have grown some monsters.

Third class and more papyrus

We had the third class last Saturday and made exposed stitch leather bindings using offcuts from Reverse Art and I used more of Te Willan's buttons. Below you can see the models I made both before and during the class. I even went home after class and added a piece of leather to the book I made last week, I think it looks heaps better now.
Oh and I've had my first two sales on etsy both within about a week of each other.

The papyrus has now been soaking for nearly two weeks and it is mostly ready for the next stage which is laying out the pieces so that they just overlap then laying another lot on top running in the other direction and pressing between cloths. I will now have to change the cloths regularly until the papyrus is dry.
